The design of cars has changed greatly over the years. Good car design as been regelated, for some, to the history books. An era when cars were drawn by hand, and inevitably more curvaceous, has given birth to period of homogeneous car design, in which everything looks like a Honda. The history of car design is fascinating, in how little attention it is given compared to other mediums, like architecture, painting, and music.

Car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, who is now 84, has recently re-entered the fray through a partnership with Hyundai to resuscitate the “Pony Coupe,” his own design from the 1970s, for today.

Hyundai unveiled the restored Pony Coupe at the inaugural Hyundai Reunion event in Lake Como, Italy, just across the lake from George Clooney’s house, in May of last year.

The design of the Pony Coupe is shockingly nice, and like Tesla’s cybertruck, it was built around a stainless steel exoskeleton, however with a much more subtle, and potentially less controversial design decisions. If Giugiaro had designed the Cybertruck, I think, it would have been the turning point of an era.
